As I was laying in bed last night, suddenly a little light went on 💡, and I think I’ve come up with an explanation of why Heather has some hesitancy or fear in three particular daily functions: using the toilet, having a shower, and going to bed. Each of these activities has become a challenge over the past several weeks. The fear of showering is brand new and I’ve only seen it once so far, but it was very noticeable. So the little light that went on is that I believe it’s because she doesn’t know what’s going on behind her both through a loss of cognition and the loss of peripheral vision. There’s another term known as proprioception, which is your ability to know where your body is in space and I suspect that is heavily impacted in dementia as well.
Anyway, I just made this video very quickly this morning as I was running around trying to get caught up on errands while Heather is at the day program. I hope it helps some of you. Don’t forget to like and subscribe this video in YouTube, please. Have a great day!
