In my book, Fridays with Heather – An Art Journey through Dementia, you will find samples of the art Heather and I made together from the early fall of 2022 until the early winter of 2024. As you will see, there was a rapid decline in Heather’s approach to making art during this time.
On this page, I will continue to post samples of what we are doing. While motivating Heather to tap into her creativity is becoming increasingly challenging, I will continue to make every effort to encourage her.
I have always made my art alongside Heather but now it is essential. Just as she now struggles with using cutlery, a paintbrush is foreign to her every time we meet. Encouraging and teaching by example seems to be the best way to help Heather get started on her piece of art.
This painting is one Heather made on Friday, March 15, 2024. Heather initiated the piece below by painting a yellow circle. She tends to paint the same area over and over often which she did with the yellow paint. As I looked over at Heather’s yellow circle, I commented that it looked like a sun.
Heather surprised me then by painting rays emanating from the yellow circle. She followed by painting over the yellow with blue paint followed by more yellow.
